A Circular Hike from Ansley thro' Old Arley, Birchley Heath, Ansley Common and back to Ansley

The walk starts from The Lord Nelson Inn, CV10 9PQ; the pub carpark is not available for parking without prior permission but there is ample street parking in Nuthurst Crescent adjacent to the pub.

From the Lord Nelson turn right down the main road on the LHS, at the Ansley Fish Bar turn left onto a narrow footpath which bends to the left behind the fish bar. Follow this enclosed path through a gate and then turn right and continue to follow the footpath beside a fence which leads to a gate opening onto a golf course. Bear to the right across the golf course heading to the right of a group trees and to the left of a bunker taking care to avoid golfers teeing off, continue right across the golf course making for the far right corner. In the corner turn right by a large bunker into a wooded area, looking for a gate on the left, go through the gate and across a footbridge through the trees, turn right. Follow the path with the trees on the right through a gate and continue following the path with the hedge on the right. Keep following the path into Old Arley, turn left along the Ansley Lane to the pub "A Wagon Load of Lime", just past the pub, turn right along a lane which leads into a field. When reaching Arley Wood bear right along the edge of the wood and keep following the edge of the wood through a gate, when the wood edge turns left follow it through a gate keeping the wood on the left, but at the end of the wood continue straight on across a cultivated field to a gate leading to a lane.

Turn left along the lane in front of the disused Ansley Mill, just past the mill turn right onto a path with a stream on the left. Follow the path along the stream through trees, when the stream bends to the left follow the path to the right up a steep slope, keep following the path with a hedge on the right. When reaching a pond keep to the right of it and follow the path through a hedge and along the right hand edge of a cultivated field. Ignore a footpath sign pointing to the right and continue to the next post, turn sharply right diagonally across the cultivated field aiming to the right of an ash tree, through a gate, maintain direction diagonally across the next cultivated field in front of Springfield Farm aiming for a gap in the hedge ahead. Past the farm buildings,  look for a farm gate on the right, go through the gate and cross the field aiming for a group of portaloos, behind the portaloos, go through a gate in the hedge and turn left.  Continue left keeping the hedge on the left to the corner of the field and go through a gate leading onto a lane.

Turn right along the lane and when reaching the Nuneaton Road, cross it to go up the drive to Hoar Park Farm. At the farm yard, turn right and right again and then left in front of some barns to a gate leading to stables, follow the path through the stable yard. When reaching a track go across to a path going diagonally across a field, follow the path to the far side of the field and then turn left to the corner of the field. At the corner leave the field down a steep slope through some trees and across a footbridge, proceed down the edge of the field with the hedge on the right into the next field. Look for a Centenary Way sign on the right and follow it, continue to follow Centenary Way signs across several fields and along the edges of cultivated fields eventually coming to a gate in on the right leading into some trees, go through the trees up a slope and out onto a road. Turn right along the road to a drive on the left, go up the drive into a field and follow a Centenary Way sign to the right into an ancient wood, follow the footpath thro' the wood and exit via a gate into a field leading to Birchley Heath.

When reaching the road turn left through the village, at the end of the village turn right along a lane, through a gate into a field still following the Centenary Way, go ahead with a hedge close on the left into the next field keeping the hedge on the left, in the third field take a gate on the right and proceed to Lady Wood Farm. At the farm look for and take a gate on the right leading into the farmyard, go through the farmyard into a field alongside a wood and proceed to a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right along a lane. Walk along the lane for about 1/4 mile and just before a sharp left bend in the lane take a footpath on the right and then maintain direction along a well trodden path. After some 400 yards turn left down some steps through a gate and into a field following a Centenary Way sign, follow the path through a gate and then continue round a right hand bend along the edge of a cultivated field to another gate and footbridge. Turn right after the gate and follow the footpath to Common Farm, through another gate on the left as the farm is reached, go across the farm garden to yet another gate leading to the farmyard.  Go diagonally across the farmyard to a lane and continue along the lane, passing through a disused railway bridge walls until you reach the main road, turn right at the road and cross over it.

Go past the church and then turn left up a walk way signed North Warwickshire Trail (it is still Centenary Way), at the end of the walk way go through a gate and turn left along the edge of a cultivated field, at the end of the field hedge keep ahead until a lane is reached, turn right along the lane for a short distance then go over a style on the left. Immediately over the style continue parallel to the lane along the edge of a cultivated field going uphill. At the top of the hill go into a second field turning half right to go diagonally across the field to the far right corner by a wood, here follow the Centenary Way sign into a new field. Cross this field diagonally making for a waymark post at a hedge corner, turn half right on reaching the post proceed keeping the hedge on the left. Follow the footpath onto a lane and continue along the lane looking for a gate in the hedge on the right, when found go thro' the gate and turn half left to cross the field diagonally, keep following Centenary way signs across several fields until a road is reached. Cross this road and go ahead down a road leading to a factory complex, at the end of the road on the right a narrow enclosed footpath is reached which should be taken. Follow this footpath round a bend to the right and continue with a fence on the right and a railway behind trees on the left. Keep on this path until it ends through a gate into a field, this is where the Centenary Way is no longer followed, here keep ahead up and over a hill to a gate leading onto a road at the bottom of the hill. Cross over the road to Nuthurst Crescent and proceed along the crescent where you will reach the Lord Nelson on the right.
