Circular Walk from Henley-in-Arden along the Arden Way to Morton Bagot and back via Heart of England Way

This walk starts outside the The White Swan Hotel, 100 High Street, Henley-in-Arden, B95 5BY. The nearest free car park is on The Croft, B95 5DY, just off the High Street. See below for a map and photos from the route.

From the White Swan proceed north along the High St. and turn left into Station Road, after about 100 yards bear right along Bear Lane. Directly after going under a railway bridge look for a gate at the top of a stepped bank on the right and go through it to a footpath running parallel to the railway on the right. this is the Arden Way, follow this path to where it turns left on a golf course, pass in front of the golf club and go half right to a sign post. Follow the Arden Way waymarks to the right and proceed along a bridleway with a hedge on the left, when you come to a lake turn left to keep the lake on the right, when you leave the lake keep ahead, following the Arden Way round to the right, over a stile and half left to a gate leading to a farmyard. Cross the farmyard to a road.

Turn left along the road for 1/4 mile then look for a green track on the left (still the Arden Way) at the edge of a wood, follow the track to the end of the wood and then turn right along a road. 250 yards along the road turn left over a stile onto a footpath with a hedge on the left, after some 300 yards the path goes through the hedge and leads into a churchyard. Go ahead through the churchyard around a tree on the right and exit through a gate onto a tarmacked track. The track leads onto a road, turn left along the road and continue to a T-junction. At the T-junction go straight ahead through a gate and follow the path diagonally across a field to a gate in the hedge, down a bank and across a lane into another field via a stile.

Follow the path to a gate exiting the field onto a narrow alleyway opening up onto a road which leads into Ullenhall, take the right fork leading to the main road, turn right towards the Winged Spur public house and cross the road. Take a narrow alley between houses on the left opposite the Winged Spur waymarked Arden Way and follow it into a park, keep ahead through the park and pass through a gate onto a road. Turn right onto Church Road and proceed for a 1/4 mile to a gate on the left of the road marked Arden Way, go over a stile at the left of the gate and then across the middle of the field to a main road. Cross the main road and turn left for about 100 yards to a farm drive, turn left through a gate on the right of the drive across some rough grass to a gate on the left. Go through the gate and across the drive over a stile and then follow the path with a hedge on the right up an incline. At the top go through a farm gate into some trees and turn right to a second gate, turn left after the second gate along a track with a fence on the right and a wood on the left. Proceed along the track through another gate into a field still with the fence on the right, at the top of the field turn left before reaching the hedge proceeding downhill with the hedge on the right to the end of the field, go through a gate in the hedge on the right and then turn left to a road.

On the road turn left and proceed some 100 yards along the right hand side to a stile deep in the hedge, over the stile proceed diagonally across the field aiming for farm buildings at the far left corner of the field. Go through a gate into a farmyard and past two bull houses on the left, keep to the left through the farmyard to the farm drive. At this point the walk leaves the Arden Way. Go along the drive which runs into a road, proceed 600 yards along the road to a T-junction, turn right at the junction and after a short distance look for a stile hidden deep in the hedge on the right, go over the stile and turn half left to a gate. Go through the gate and turn right, go ahead along the edge of a cultivated field with a hedge on the right, at a left hand bend take a gate on the right into some rough pasture land, go diagonally over the pasture to a gate onto a road. Turn right along the road for approx. 1/2 mile, at a sharp left hand bend in the road go through a gate on the left to join the Heart of England Way and onto a forestry track which rises steeply into Bannam's Wood. Follow the forestry track until it becomes a footpath signed Heart of England Way, keep along this path as it winds through the wood to a gate into an open field.

Go ahead through the gate for about 50 yards to a stile on the right, go over the stile and turn left down a steep incline with a hedge on the left. At the bottom of the field go into some trees to a gate leading onto a road. Cross the road and through a gate into a cultivated field, go straight ahead with the hedge on the left to the far left corner, pass into the next field via a deep ditch, at a large oak tree go half right across the middle of the cultivated field aiming for a stile in a gap in the hedge half way along the far side. Continue ahead diagonally across the next field climbing a hill to a stile in the right hand corner, maintain direction across the next field to a stile in the hedge, and continue down hill to a group of trees in the far left corner. In the group of trees cross over a footbridge, turn half left through the trees to a stile leading to stepping stones across a stream at the bottom of a deep ditch, over a stile at the top of the far bank and then go ahead to a stile in a fence opposite.

Cross over the stile into an orchard, through the orchard to a stile leading into gravel driveways to the left of some new houses, go right of a wall to a stile in a low wall leading to a main road. Cross straight over the road to a stile leading into a field, the other side of the stile cross over a fence using breeze blocks and go past a post in the middle of the field, keep ahead across the middle of two fields to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and turn left with a hedge on the left to two gates at right angles to each other, go through the gate on the right and turn right following Heart of England Way waymarks to a path passing through some trees to a gate leading onto a path passing between allotments. Keep ahead to steps to a footbridge crossing the railway at Henley station, over the bridge cross the road to further steps up to an alleyway between fences with waymaks for HoE Way. At the end of the alley follow signs to the shops, winding through to the White Swan carpark and garden and thence through an arch to Henley High St.
