Circular Walk from Hampton via Barston and Balsall Common

The walk starts at the gym by going down Old Station Road towards Hampton village, at the end turn right along Meriden Road passing over the railway bridge, cross over the road and continue to the sharp right hand bend and there turn left down Belle Vue Terrace. At the end of Belle Vue Terrace take a short enclosed footpath on the right which leads to a metal gate on the left, go through the gate and, keeping a hedge on the left, proceed along the side of the rough pasture to the end. Here, pass through two gates within 10 yards and keep ahead along the next field still with the hedge on the left, maintain direction across a footbridge into the next field and continue until a farm track is reached, cross over the track and follow a footpath slightly to the left across the middle of a cultivated field. Passing through a gap in the hedge enter a field and make for a gap in the fence on the right, go through the gap and turn left onto a lane.

Proceed along the lane until houses are reached, go through a gate on the left and turn right in front of some new houses making for a gate some 100 yards away, go through the gate into a wooded area. Follow the track through the trees. As it exits the trees the track turns to the left and after a short distance turns to the right into a cultivated field, follow a footpath across the middle of the field which leads to a wooded area with a footbridge crossing a stream which in turn enters a meadow. Again follow the path across the middle of the meadow to a gap in the hedge on the far side leading to a further field in which the path again goes across the middle. At the opposite side look for a stile in the hedge and go over it into a new field with a hedge on the immediate left, follow the hedge to another stile and continue with a hedge on the right to a narrow alley way through some houses which leads onto Oak Lane, Barston.

Turn right along Oak Lane to a T-junction with Barston Lane, turn left and go ahead past the Bulls Head, cross the road and proceed past St Swithun's church to a double gate on the right, turn right through the gate and cross the churchyard keeping to the left to reach a gate to a track. Go through the gate and follow the track as it sweeps to the left looking for a gate in the hedge on the right. Go through the gate and keeping to the left of the hedge go straight ahead, maintain direction crossing the River Blythe by a footbridge and follow the footpath through a large field as it turns first gently to the right and then half left passing by a round depression on the left to a gate leading onto a road.

Cross the road and turn left until a wood is reached on the right with a footpath signpost pointing to the right, follow the signpost and go over a stile into a cultivated field.  Walk along the edge of the field with trees on the left to a junction of 4 footpaths, turn left onto the Heart of England Way and follow the path across three cultivated fields to a rough grassy area where the path turns to the left and then right to Magpie Lane. Turn left on Magpie Lane looking for a signpost on the right with a HoE waymark pointing to the right, go right through a gate and along the path with a hedge on the right, follow the path around a house to a gate leading onto a lane. Turn left along the lane for some 100 yards to a main road with the Saracen's Head visible on the right, turn left along the main road for about 220 yards and, crossing the road, turn right over a stile next to a gate and follow the hedge on the left over two stiles. Maintain direction across a field, crossing a footbridge in the middle to reach a stile in the far hedge. Cross the stile and continue ahead across a field to a junction of four footpaths, here go straight ahead with a hedge on the left following the path downhill to a footbridge hidden in some trees, cross the bridge, over a stile into a meadow. Go uphill along the left hand edge of the meadow turning right at the top and along the top edge to a stile on the left, go over the stile to the drive of Wootton Grange, turn half right along the drive. At the entrance to the drive go straight ahead to a T-junction, go right to come to another T-junction with a dual carriage way, turn left and proceed for 275 yards then cross the road to go down Park lane towards Berkswell.

Continue Down Park Lane for 330 yards to reach a kissing gate on the left leading to a wooded area which opens up into a cultivated field, proceed along the left side of the field with hedge/fence on the left until you reach a gate, ignore the gate and turn left through some trees to a large field where the path crosses diagonally to a narrow strip of trees into a field and continue along the right hand edge with a hedge which becomes trees on the right. Follow along the trees in the next field looking for a gate into the woods on the right, go through the gate into the wood and follow the path to a stile leading into a meadow. Follow the hedge on the left and turn right where a hedge comes in from the right keeping this hedge on the left, at the end of the field go through a gate with a bull warning sign. Follow the path across the field, over a footbridge into a second field and then over a stile to a path which passes to the left of a large quarry behind a fence, follow the path to a track and turn left along the track.

Proceed along the track to the A452 dual carriageway, cross the dual carriageway and turn right down the old road. Continue along the old road past the nature reserve to Patrick Farm where the walk joins the Meriden Road into Hampton-in-Arden. Turn left along the road, cross the bridge and look for a sign post on the left hand side of the road, cross the road and follow the direction of the signpost through a gate and into a field. Traverse the field making for a hedge corner by a phone mast, at this point go between the mast and the hedge to a gate leading to an enclosed footpath, follow the path between hedges to start and then in the open with a fence on the right. When the fence ends, keep ahead through a cultivated field, at the end of the field, turn right with a hedge on the left. At the end of the hedge turn left through a gate into a narrow, enclosed footpath, after a short distance cross over a road into another narrow alley way which leads in turn to the drive way to a large house, turn left along the drive way. From the drive turn right onto a road which leads onto the Merden Road, turn left and cross the road to turn right down Old Station Road back to the gym.
